Ultraviolet absorbers are additives designed to prevent large amounts of ultraviolet radiation from passing through materials. Effective ultraviolet absorbers should possess excellent thermal stability, maintaining performance during processing with low thermal volatility. They should strongly absorb UV radiation, particularly in the 290–400 nm wavelength range, while also exhibiting good chemical stability without reacting negatively with other material components.
In addition, ultraviolet absorbers should have good compatibility and dispersibility within materials, avoiding frosting or seepage. The absorbers themselves should feature strong photochemical stability, remaining resistant to decomposition and discoloration. Ideal UV absorbers are also colorless, odorless, non-toxic, resistant to immersion, and cost-effective.
Based on their chemical structures, ultraviolet absorbers can be classified into several categories, including salicylates, benzophenones, benzotriazoles, substituted acrylonitriles, and triazines. When incorporated into fabrics, these absorbers provide excellent UV-blocking performance, helping reduce fading and improve the light fastness of polyester disperse dyes.
