Antioxidant MBI, also known as 2-mercaptobenzimidazole, is a thiol-substituted nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compound and an important category of pharmaceutical intermediates. It is widely used in pharmaceuticals, pesticides, chemicals, and related industries. The pure product appears as white to light yellow fine crystalline powder, featuring low toxicity and a bitter taste. It has a relative density of 1.40–1.44 and a melting point of not less than 285°C. The compound is soluble in ether, acetone, and ethyl acetate, slightly soluble in petroleum ether and dichloromethane, and insoluble in carbon tetrachloride, benzene, and water.
