Product Application

2-Ethyl anthraquinone is hydrogenated in a solvent to form 2-ethylhydroanthraquinone, which is subsequently reoxidized to regenerate 2-ethylanthraquinone and produce hydrogen peroxide. This industrial process is widely used for the manufacture of hydrogen peroxide.

It can be synthesized via the Friedel–Crafts reaction of phthalic anhydride with ethylbenzene, and can also be obtained through Diels–Alder diene synthesis followed by dehydrogenation of 1,4-naphthoquinone and 2-ethyl-1,3-butadiene.

In addition, it is used in the production of hydrogen peroxide and as an intermediate in dye manufacturing. It also serves as a photosensitizer for photosensitive resins, a catalyst for photocurable resins, a component in photodegradable films and coatings, and as a photopolymerization initiator.
