Triiron Tetraoxide CAS #1317-61-9

1.Natural and synthetic sources – Triiron tetroxide can be obtained from natural magnetite or produced in the laboratory using controlled chemical reactions.

2.Multiple production methods – It can be synthesized via precipitation from ferrous and ferric salts, partial oxidation of iron or iron(II) sulfate, or reaction of iron with steam.

3.High purity potential – Laboratory-controlled methods allow for precise production of triiron tetroxide with minimal impurities.

4.Versatile precursor – Its production methods provide flexibility for different industrial and research applications.

Product Description

Triiron tetroxide can be obtained from its natural mineral source, magnetite. In laboratory settings, it can be synthesized by adding a sodium hydroxide solution to an aqueous 1:2 molar mixture of ferrous and ferric salts (1 mol FeCl₂ + 2 mol FeCl₃). The resulting black hydroxide precipitate dehydrates upon heating to form triiron tetroxide:

Fe²⁺(aq) + 2Fe³⁺(aq) + 8OH⁻(aq) → Fe₃(OH)₈(s)
Fe₃(OH)₈(s) → Fe₃O₄(s) + 4H₂O(g)

Triiron tetroxide can also be produced through partial oxidation of iron or iron(II) sulfate by heating under limited air supply. Another method involves reacting iron metal with steam at elevated temperatures.
